World amateur muaythai championships to start this Friday

The 2009 world amateur muaythai championships is about to start this Friday with an ambitious aim to push the martial art as an Olympic sport.

According to a press conference on November 23, the championships will be held at The Mall Ngamwongwan shopping center and Sanam Luang in Bangkok from November 27 to December 5. The organizers said they would try to have 82 nations participate in the games to honor the 82th birthday anniversary of His Majesty the King of Thailand on the last day of the games.

The winners of the 14 events, split equally for male and female, will earn the rights to compete in the first World Martial Arts Games in Beijing in 2010.

Amateur Muaythai Association of Thailand (AMAT) president Sakchai Tapsuwan, who is part of the organizing panel, said he has invited the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to observe the games in order to ask it to help promote muaythai as an Olympic sport.

เพื่อเป็นการเฉลิมฉลองปีมหามงคล ที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงเจริญพระชนมพรรษา 82 พรรษาในปีนี้ จึงมีการจัดมวยไทยขึ้นระหว่างวันที่ 27 พ.ย.-5 ธ.ค.52 โดยเวทีชั่วคราวที่ ห้างเดอะมอลล์ งามวงศ์วาน ตั้งแต่วันแรกจนถึงรอบรอง ส่วนรอบชิงวันที่ 5 ธ.ค. จะจัดขึ้นที่ท้องสนามหลวง ใช้งบประมาณ 13 ล้านบาท ศึกนี้จะมียอดนักชกฝีมือดีจากทั่วโลกมาชิงชัย จากการแบ่งเป็น7รุ่น ประเภทชาย และ7รุ่น ประเภทยิง ผู้ชนะจะได้สิทธิ์ไปร่วมแข่งขัน เวิลด์มาร์เชี่ยลอาร์ตเกมสื ครั้งที่ 1 ที่กรุงปักกิ่ง ประเทศจีน เป็นเจ้าภาพในปี 2010

ดร.ศักดิ์ชัย ทัพสุวรรณ เผยอีกว่า ในการแข่งขันครั้งนี้สมาคมยังได้เชิผยคณะกรรมการโอลิมปิกแห่งเอเชีย หรือไอโอซี รวมไปถึงตัวแทนจาก ไกลฟ์ (สมัชชาสหพันธ์กีฬานานาชาติ) เดินทางมาดูระบบการจัดการแข่งขัน จากนั้นจะพยายามผลักดันและเจรจาให้โอไอซี รับรองมวยไทยสมัครเล่นชิงแชมป์โลก เพื่อให้มีโอกาสผลักดันบรรจุเข้าโอลิมปิกเกมส์ ในอนาคต ซึ่งจะเป็นมิติใหม่ที่ดีในการพัฒนากีฬามวยไทยให้ก้าวไกลไปสู่อนาคตต่อไป
