The Thai national boxing squad will not participate in the new professional-like league of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), says Thailand's boxing chief General Taweep Jantararoj.

According to AIBA's website, the association is planning the World Series of Boxing (WSB), a program that allows amateur boxers to "compete professionally" while "retaining their Olympic eligibility" through three continental conferences and five weight categories from bantamweight to heavyweight.

"The boxers will compete within teams across three global regions: Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Each bout will be made up of five rounds of three minutes per bout, with not vests or headgear. In addition, boxers will be provided with reliable income and a guaranteed schedule of bouts. This will allow the boxers to grow in technique and style," said the website.

General Taweep, currently the president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (ABAT) and a suspended board member of AIBA, said the leaque is considered a good project as it would facilitate the career path of amateur boxers who are looking to turn professional. However, he said the Thai national boxing squad would not participate in the program as they would rather focus on the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

"We have to admit that the London Games will be hard for the Thai team. So, if we want gold medals in that event, we would have to prepare our boxers much harder and could not afford to divert attention to other programs, as the boxers of many nations are now equally matched and the sport sciences have been advanced much," he said.

"ABAT has a good preparation at a level, and we believe that one day the Thai boxers would be ready to claim the Olympic gold medals."

ไอบ้า ผุดไอเดียจัดการแข่งขันมวยสากลสมัครเล่นรายการ “เวิลด์ ซีรีส์ ออฟบ๊อกซิ่ง” หวังปลุกกระแสมวยสมัครเล่น รวมถึงพัฒนาเทคนิคและสไตล์การชก ด้าน "เสธ.วีป" เชื่อเป็นการปูทางให้นักมวยสมัครเล่นเทิร์นโปรสู่สังเวียนผ้าใบอาชีพ

วันนี้ (2 มิ.ย.) พล.อ.ทวีป จันทรโรจน์ นายกสมาคมมวยสากลสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทยฯ เปิดเผยว่า ทางสหพันธ์มวยสากลสมัครเล่นนานาชาติ หรือ ไอบ้า มีโครงการที่จะจัดการแข่งขันมวยสากลสมัครเล่นในรูปแบบที่คล้ายคลึงกับมวยสากลอาชีพในรายการ “เวิลด์ ซีรีส์ ออฟบ๊อกซิ่ง” โดยจะมีการแข่งขันใน 3 ทวีปคือ เอเซีย ยุโรป และอเมริกา เป็นหลัก เพราะเชื่อว่านักชกที่เป็นสุดยอดในระดับแถวหน้าจะอยู่ใน 3 ทวีปดังกล่าว ซึ่งการแข่งขันกำหนด 5 ยกๆ ละ 3 นาที พัก 1 นาที และชกโดยไม่ใส่เฮดการ์ดเหมือนกับการชกอาชีพ มีจัดแข่ง 5 รุ่นเริ่มตั้งแต่รุ่นแบนต้ัมเวท ,ไลท์เวท ,มิดเดิ้ลเวท ,ไลท์เฮฟวี่เวท และ เฮฟวี่เวท

พล.อ.ทวีป กล่าวต่อว่า นอกจากนี้นักชกที่เข้าร่วมในรายการนี้จะได้สิทธิ์เข้าร่วมการแข่งขัน โอลิมปิกเกมส์เหมือนเดิม นายกมวยเสื้อกล้ามไทย กล่าวอีกว่า สำหรับมวยรายการนี้ทางไอบ้าแจ้งว่าจัดขึ้นมาเพื่อเป็นการสร้างความตื่นเต้น และสร้างกระแสของมวยสมัครเล่นให้มีความน่าสนใจมากยิ่งขึ้นอีกทั้งยังเป็นการ พัฒนาเทคนิคและสไตล์การชกให้ใหม่อยู่เสมอ โดยการแข่งขันจะมีทั้งประเภทบุคคลและทีม ซึ่งจะเริ่มจัดในเดือน ก.ย.ปีหน้า สำหรับนักชกที่เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันทุกคนจะมีรายได้อย่างเป็นกอบเป็นกำเหมือน กับการชกอาชีพ

“เสธ.วีป” ระบุอีกว่า ถือเป็นโครงการที่ดี เพราะจะเป็นการปูทางสำหรับการเทิร์นโปรขึ้นชกอาชีพสำหรับนักมวยสมัครเล่นใน อนาคต สำหรับทีมไทยคิดว่ายังไม่พร้อมที่ส่งเพราะดุแล้วเรายังไม่มีนักชกที่แกร่งพอ เท่าที่มีอยู่ประสบการณ์ยังน้อยเกินไป และตนต้องการเน้นไปยังการแข่งขันโอลิมปิกเกมส์ 2012 ที่ประเทศอังกฤษมากกว่า

"ต้องยอมรับว่า “ลอนดอนเกมส์” จะเป็นงานที่ยากและหนักของไทย หากเราต้องการความสำเร็จในเรื่องของเหรียญทองคงต้องมีการเตรียมพรัอมสำหรับ นักชกให้มากขึ้นกว่าเดิมหลายเท่าเราจะไปหวังเรื่องอื่นๆ คงไม่ได้ เพราะตอนนี้ศักยภาพนักชกหลายชาติมีความใกล้เคียงกัน รวมทั้งเรื่องของวิทยาศาสตร์การกีฬาก็ก้าวไกลมาก ซึ่งตอนนี้ทางสมาคมฯก็ได้เตรียมการมาแล้วในระดับหนึ่งเชื่อว่าเมื่อถึงวัน นั้นทีมนักชกไทยจะมีความพร้อมในการล่าเหรียญทองในโอลิมปิกเกมส์แน่นอน" ประมุขใหญ่ขุนพลเสื้อกล้ามไทย ตบท้าย
