Thailand’s Department of Corrections is holding a boxing tournament for inmates of both sexes, hoping to recreate the success story of inmate-turned-champion like Olympian Amnat Ruenroeng and WIBA international flyweight title holder Samson Tor Buamad. The sixth “Dan Samakkee Games” tournament, to be held at Thonburi Remand Prison on August 22-28, will feature competitions in nine weight classes for male boxing and seven for female as well as events in the petanque and sepak takraw sports for 707 athletes who are representing corrections facilities throughout the country. The tournament is part of the plan to recruit athletes for the national boxing squad to compete in the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016, said the director of the Thonburi facility Preeda Nilsiri. According to him, those who won a gold medal in the inmate games will receive prize money of 3,000 Baht, while the silver and bronze medalists will win 2,000 and 1,000 Baht, respectively. However, one of the top female pugilists, A Muangnakin, will not be able to compete in the games as the laws prohibit inmates with heavy sentence like her to leave the facility. The national tournament silver medalist will likely not be able compete in the upcoming SEA Games in Laos as well, but the corrections department is considering amending the laws.
