Thailand’s amateur boxing chief General Taweep Jantararoj says he would support the decision of two-time Olympic medalist Manus Boonjumnong and his younger brother Non to leave the national boxing squad to turn professional. 

Manus, who became the first Thai to win two Olympic medals after earning a gold from Athens in 2004 and a silver in Beijing in 2008, was cited by several newspapers as saying he has been considering whether to shift career to professional boxing,

In response, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (ABAT) General Taweep said he would allow the brothers “to follow their dreams” if they made a proper request to leave the national squad.

He said he would also find the best promoter for the two and help ensure that they would receive fair earning. However, he added that the boxers must continue to maintain the discipline and determination regardless of whether they are in the amateur squad or not.

Earlier on July 27, General Taweep’s ABAT has signed a memorandum of understanding with its main sponsor Krungthai Bank on the funding of 60 million Baht for the plan to earn at least one gold medal from the London Games in 2012.

กรุงไทยหนุนมวยเสื้อกล้าม4ปี60ล้าน ไฟเขียว"มนัส-นน"เดินสายกำปั้นอาชีพตามที่ฝัน

เมื่อ 27 ก.ค. ที่ผ่านมา ที่อาคารสำนักงานใหญ่ ธนาคารกรุงไทย ได้มีพิธีลงนามบันทึกข้อตกลงสนับสนุนสมาคมมวยสากลสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ โดยมี "เสธ.หนั่น"พลตรีสนั่น ขจรประศาสน์ รองนายกรัฐมนตรี เป็นประธานในพิธี โดยมี "เสธ.ทวีป" พลเอกทวีป จันทรโรจน์ นายกสมาคมมวยฯ พร้อมด้วย นายอภิศักดิ์ ตันติวรวงศ์ กรรมการผู้จัดการ บมจ.ธนาคารกรุงไทย

นายอภิศักดิ์ ตันติวรวงศ์ เผยว่า ธนาคารกรุงไทยสนับสนุนสมาคมมวยฯ มาตั้งแต่ปีพ.ศ.2549-2551 เป็นเงิน 60 ล้านบาท เป็นกำลังสำคัญทำให้ทีมนักชกไทยคว้า 1 เหรียญทอง 1 เหรียญเงินในกีฬาโอลิมปิก 2008 "ปักกิ่งเกมส์" รวมกับการสนับสนุนในครั้งนี้แล้วเป็นเงิน 120 ล้านบาท ซึ่งธนาคารกรุงไทยมั่นใจว่าจะสามารถช่วยให้นักชกไทยไปคว้าอย่างน้อย 1 เหรียญทอง นำความสุขมาสู่ชาวไทยอีกครั้ง ในกีฬาโอลิมปิก 2012 "ลอนดอนเกมส์"

นายก สมาคมมวยเสื้อกล้ามไทย ได้กล่าวว่า การที่ธนาคารกรุงไทย ต่อสัญญาการสนับสนุนอีก ทำให้สมาคมมวยฯ เกิดสภาพคล่องในการวางแผนระยะยาวสร้างนักชกไปสู่โอลิมปิก

ส่วนกรณี ที่ มนัส บุญจำนงค์ เจ้าของเหรียญทองโอลิมปิก 2004 และเหรียญเงินโอลิมปิก 2008 และน้องชาย นน บุญจำนงค์ จะมาขอไปชกมวยอาชีพนั้น นายกสมาคมมวยเสื้อกล้ามกล่าวว่า ตนพร้อมให้โอกาสทั้ง 2 คนเดินตามความฝันของตัวเอง แต่ต้องเข้ามาคุยกัน ตนจะหาสังกัดหรือโปรโมเตอร์ที่ดีที่สุดให้ พร้อมช่วยดูแลด้านสิทธิประโยชน์ให้นักชกได้รับความเป็นธรรมที่สุด แต่อยากบอกว่าไม่ว่าจะชกมวยสากลสมัครเล่นหรืออาชีพ สิ่งสำคัญที่สุดคือต้องมีระเบียบวินัย และความทุ่มเทในการฝึกซ้อม จึงจะประสบความสำเร็จ
