Thailand’s WBC “interim” flyweight title holder Pongsaklek Wonjongkam has defeated Japan’s Takahisa Masuda by technical knockout in the sixth round on Friday, while the Thai pugilist’s next match against Japan’s Naito Daisuke will be delayed to the beginning of the next year.

Pongsaklek, although considerably shorter, was able to land a right punch to the chin of the Japanese challenger, sending him down to the canvas for a count of eight in the second round of the WBC international title match held in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai on August 28.

In the sixth round, the Thai pugilist launched some combination attack and followed it with a right uppercut to Masuda’s face, putting him down to the canvas again. This time, the Australian referee decided to end the game at 1.06 minutes of the sixth round, allowing Pongsaklek to win by technical knockout.

Pongsaklek is on his way to challenge his long-time rival and the non-interim title holder Naito Daisuke of Japan, but Thai promoter Wirat Wachiraratanawong said Daisuke’s promoter has asked him to allow another boxer to challenge Daisuke first.

Wirat said he would let Daisuke fight one more challenger before facing Pongsaklek in the beginning of the next year.

Pongsaklek said he does not care if the match would be delayed to the next year, but he will be ready to fight Daisuke in Japan and claim the title.

Also at the same event in Chiang Mai, Wanheng Meenayothin became winner of the eight-man muaythai tournament after defeating Petchsurat Sor Yupinda by decision in the final round.
