Thai amateur boxing athletes Kaew Pongprayoon and Wutthichai Masuk have won gold medals from the Asian Boxing Championships in Zhuhai, China, on last Sunday.
Two out of five Thai athletes advanced to the finals of the Asian Boxing Championships on June 14. Kaew and India’s Youth world champion Thokchom Nanao Singh had a closely matched fight in the lightweight final, with both athletes scoring eight points until the last 15 seconds of the last round, when Kaew scored the decisive ninth point from a counter strike to his opponent’s face.
Nanao tried to even out the points but the Thai kept distance and refused to let him engage until the round ended. Kaew emerged as the first Thai to win a gold medal at the event.

The rift between the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) and Thailand's boxing chief General Taweep Jantararoj seems to grow as the Thai general accused that AIBA’s officials “play dumb” when dealing with his case, while the association has reportedly forbidden its members from getting involved with General Taweep’s ASEAN association.
AIBA reportedly sent letters to its members to forbid them from participating with the activities of the Federation of ASEAN Amateur Boxing, which is chaired General Taweep.
In response, General Taweep said his Southeast Asian association was not affiliated with AIBA to begin with, and the organization was founded only to handle regional events such as the SEA Games. He said the organization would continue to operate despite AIBA’s dissatisfaction as long as the members are willing to cooperate. Otherwise, it may be dissolved.

The Thai national boxing squad will not participate in the new professional-like league of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), says Thailand's boxing chief General Taweep Jantararoj.
According to AIBA's website, the association is planning the World Series of Boxing (WSB), a program that allows amateur boxers to "compete professionally" while "retaining their Olympic eligibility" through three continental conferences and five weight categories from bantamweight to heavyweight.
"The boxers will compete within teams across three global regions: Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Each bout will be made up of five rounds of three minutes per bout, with not vests or headgear. In addition, boxers will be provided with reliable income and a guaranteed schedule of bouts. This will allow the boxers to grow in technique and style," said the website.
General Taweep, currently the president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (ABAT) and a suspended board member of AIBA, said the leaque is considered a good project as it would facilitate the career path of amateur boxers who are looking to turn professional. However, he said the Thai national boxing squad would not participate in the program as they would rather focus on the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

Thai amateur boxing chief General Taweep Jantararoj says he never claimed there was act of corruption or fraud by International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), while announcing he would accept the association's decision on his case and any punishment.
According to earlier reports, General Taweep has been “suspended” from the executive committee of International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) for his alleged criticism of the association’s judges in the Beijing Games last year. He reportedly claimed of lobby attempts against him by a certain figure close to the AIBA management.
However, the Thai amateur boxing chief has just claimed that he never made a comment that there was fraud or corruption within AIBA, and said that he only "expressed personal opinion on the performance of the Thai amateur boxing athletes at the Beijing Games, as well as analyzing the fight of other atheletes to determine how much chance each boxer had in winnin a medal".
