After beating Ricky Hatton two weeks ago, Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has practically become regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the whole world. The Pacman’s popularity and ability to earn money from matches is unrivalled, and could never ever be matched by any past or present boxer from Thailand. But if there would be one Thai fighter who had such potential, it would be Buakaw Por Pramuk.

The muaythai fighter paved his way to stardom via successes in the K-1 tournaments. He is hugely popular in Japan and is able to make good earnings in that country.

The Surin native just returned to his hometown a week ago and had a lot of stories about K-1 fights to tell his fans.

“My K-1 opponents are armed in all forms of martial arts. They have the karate techniques, as well as the kicks and rolling tricks. I could never lower my defense even for a second,” he said. 

Buakaw just defeated Brazil’s Andre Dida in the 2009 K-1 World MAX tournament on April 21 by decisions, earning himself a sport in the quarterfinal round.

“According to the new rule of World MAX this year, I would have to return for the round of eight on July 13 to fight old enemy Nieky Holtzken of the Netherlands. If I could defeat him, I would be allowed to fight in the semifinal in mid October for prize money of no less than 10 million Baht,” said Buakaw.

Nicknamed in Japan as the “Black Gold” and in Thailand as “Black.com”, the dark-skinned fighter has already won the championship of K-1 tournaments twice in 2004 and 2006, but was unexpectedly defeated by a knockout in the 2007 event.

But he still hopes to be the first three-time K-1 winner.

“In my recent bout in the round of 18, I made a mistake and was sent down for a count of eight in the first round. Fortunately, I had trained myself into a prime condition earlier, so I was able to recover in time and use my strength to rush the scores until I was able to win in the special fourth round,” he said.

“Many fans of mine may thought I had a weak spot at my chin, but if they watched the fight that day, they would see that the strike was right on target at the jaw. Anyone who was hit with that would fall.”

“Through a different perspective, the bout may have a good effect as it reminds me to not ever lose defense, regardless of the opponent. In every fight in the ring, victory must be earned through pain and, importantly, intense training that would condition the body for the fight,” said the two-time K-1 champion.

Buakaw earns at least 1.2 million Baht from each bout, making him the top muaythai fighter from Thailand in terms of international popularity. He is widely recognized around the world, but is especially popular in Japan and Europe.

Other than the upcoming K-1 matches, Buakaw is scheduled to fight his old-time opponent John Wayne Parr of Australia at an event in Jamaica on June 26.

But for now, Buakaw prefers to live as Sombat Banchamek, a simple lad who lives with his sister in his home town Surin.

Soon he will have to return to Japan to prove whether he could advance in the K-1 tournaments as the top muaythai fighter from Thailand.

ถ้าถามถึงนักมวยไทยที่สร้างรายได้เป็นกอบเป็นกำ นำรายได้เข้าประเทศหลายล้านบาทคงจะไม่มีใครเกิน "บัวขาว ป.ประมุข" ที่กำลังโด่งดังสุดขีดอยู่ในญี่ปุ่นในฐานะยอดนักมวย "เค-วัน" และทำรายได้เข้าประเทศเกิน 10 ล้านบาทเข้าไปแล้ว

บัว ขาว ป.ประมุข หรือ "แบล็ก โกลด์" ฉายาที่สื่อญี่ปุ่นตั้งให้ เพิ่งเดินทางกลับมาพักผ่อนอยู่ที่บ้านเกิด จ.สุรินทร์ ตลอดช่วงสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา และมีประสบการณ์ดีๆ ในการชกมวย "เค-วัน" มาเล่าให้ฟังมากมาย

"คู่แข่งแต่ละคนในเค-วันนั้น เขามีอาวุธกันทุกรูปแบบ ทั้งคาราเต้ ทั้งเตะ ตีลังกา เราจะประมาทไม่ได้เลยแม้แต่วินาทีเดียว..!!"

"ในปีนี้ เควัน เวิร์ลด์ แม็กซ์ 2009 มีการปรับเปลี่ยนกฎใหม่ คือผมจะต้องกลับไปแข่งอีกครั้งในรอบ 8 คน วันที่ 13 กรกฎาคม ศกนี้ จะพบกับนิกกี้ โฮลต์เซ่น คู่ปรับเก่าชาวฮอลแลนด์ หากผ่านไปได้ผมก็จะได้สิทธิ์เข้าแข่งในรอบไฟนัล หรือรอบชิงชนะเลิศ 4 คนสุดท้าย ช่วงกลางเดือนตุลาคม เพื่อชิงเงินไม่ต่ำกว่า 10 ล้านบาท"

"ดำ ดอตคอม" ฉายาของบัวขาวที่แฟนมวยชาวไทยคุ้นหู เคยสร้างผลงานคว้าแชมป์รายการนี้มาแล้ว 2 สมัย ในปี 2004 และ 2006 ก่อนจะมาพลาดท่าพ่ายน็อกอย่างพลิกล็อกตกรอบ ในปี 2007

แต่ก็ยังหวังเป็นคนแรกที่คว้าแชมป์เค-วัน 3 สมัยให้ได้

"การชกไฟต์ล่าสุดในรอบ 18 คนปีนี้ ผมก็พลาด โดนต่อยถึงนับแปดในยกแรกเหมือนกัน ดีที่ฟิตร่างกายมาเต็มร้อยจึงฟื้นได้ทัน และใช้ความแข็งแกร่งเร่งบดจนเอาชนะคะแนนไปได้ ในยกพิเศษ(ตามกฎหากเสมอใน 3 ยก ต้องชี้ขาดกันในยกที่ 4) .. แฟนมวยหลายคนคงมองว่าผมเริ่มจะมีปัญหาคางเปราะแล้ว แต่ความจริงหากใครได้ดูการชกของผมในวันนั้นคงยอมรับว่า หมัดนั้น มันเข้าโฟกัสเต็มกรามเลยทีเดียว เป็นใครโดนเข้าแบบนั้นก็ต้องลง"

ก่อนจะถึงเควัน รอบ 8 คนสุดท้าย "ดำ ดอตคอม" ยังมีโปรแกรมหาลำไพ่ไปประกาศศักดา ที่ประเทศจาเมกา โดยจะพบกับจอห์น เวย์น พาร์ คู่ปรับเก่าชาวออสเตรเลีย ในวันศุกร์ที่ 26 มิถุนายนศกนี้เสียก่อน

ทว่าก่อนศึกใหญ่และการต่อสู้อันแสนทรหดจะมา ถึง ณ เวลานี้ บัวขาวขอกลับไปเป็นนายสมบัติ บัญชาเมฆ หนุ่มสุรินทร์คนธรรมดา พักผ่อน ร่างกายและจิตใจ อยู่ใกล้ๆ น้องสาว(แท้ๆ)สุดที่รักที่บ้านเกิดสักระยะหลังกรำศึกหนักมาหมาดๆ

ก่อนจะเดินทางกลับไปญี่ปุ่นประกาศความเป็นยอดนักมวยไทยที่ได้ "โกอินเตอร์" ตัวจริง-เสียงจริง
