Thailand has secured at least five medals in muaythai at the first Asian Martial Arts Games, as four Thai female athletes and one male have received quarterfinal spots through lucky draws.

Muaythai, or “muay”, is one of the nine sports being competed at the Martial Arts Games, held in Bangkok and Suphanburi in Thailand on August 2-7. The sport sees competitions by 100 athletes from 19 nations, according to Sakchai Tapsuwan, chairman of the Amateur Muaythai Association of Thailand (AMAT).

Mr. Sakchai said although host country Thailand is expected to be the top powerhouse in the 16-event sport, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and South Korea are considered fierce contenders in the sport as well.

The draws on August 1 have yielded free passes to five Thai athletes to the quarterfinals, guaranteeing them at least bronze medals. Four athletes are female fighters in the light flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, and featherweight classes, while the fifth is in the male featherweight event.

อินดอร์สเตเดี้ยมหัวหมาก - ความเคลื่อนไหวการแข่งขันมวยไทยในศึก "เอเชี่ยนมาเชี่ยลอาร์ทเกมส์" ครั้งที่ 1 ระหว่างวันที่ 2-7 สิงหาคมนี้ ที่อาคารนิมิบุตร สนามกีฬาแห่งชาติ โดยล่าสุดเมื่อวันที่ 1 สิงหาคม ที่ผ่านมา มวยไทย มีการประชุมผู้จัดการทีมและจับสลากแบ่งสายการแข่งขัน โดย ดร. ศักดิ์ชาย ทัพสุวรรณ นายกสมาคมมวยไทยสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย กล่าวว่ามี 19 ชาติ ลงแข่งขัน นักกีฬาทั้งหมด 100 คน โดยนักกีฬาจากจีน คาซัคสถาน คาจิกิสสถาน และเกาหลีใต้ เป็นคู่แข่งที่น่ากลัวแต่ประเทศไทยยังคงเป็นตัวเต็งในการลงชิงชัย 16 เหรียญทอง ซึ่งในประเภทไลท์เวลเตอร์เวทหญิง (63.5 กก.) ไม่มีนักกีฬาแข่งขัน จึงเหลือการชิงชัยเพียง 15 เหรียญทองเท่านั้น ในขณะที่ นักชกไทยโชคดี จับสลากได้เข้าไปรอชกในรอบรองชนะเลิศ หมายถึงได้เหรียญทองแดงแน่นอนแล้ว 5 รุ่น เป็นหญิง 4 รุ่น คือ มลธิรา วัฒนภักดี รุ่นไลท์ฟลายเวทหญิง (48 กก.) กรณิกา นวลไพบูลย์ รุ่นฟลายเวทหญิง (51 กก.) ประกายดาว ประมะรี รุ่นแบนตั้มเวทหญิง (54 กก.) สรารัตน์ คงสว่าง รุ่นเฟเธอร์เวทหญิง (57 กก.) และชาย 1 รุ่น คือ กิตติศักดิ์ บุญเสมเสน รุ่น เฟเธอร์เวท ชาย (57 กก.)
