British boxer Amir Khan has fired his Cuban trainer Jorge Rubio after losing the WBO lightweight title in a knockout defeat to Breidis Prescott earlier this month. Khan is reportedly looking to hire Freddy Roach to replace Rubio as his trainer. The popular Roach has trained several famous champions including Filipino superstar boxer Manny Pacquiao. Rubio was sacked after Khan was knocked out by Breidis Prescott of Colombia in 54 seconds of the first round at M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England, on September 6. The quick defeat was devastating to Khan who prior to the fight had retained an all-win record for his 18 professional bouts. The British boxer blamed Rubio for his first loss that cost him the WBO intercontinental lightweight title, saying the trainer had not prepared him well enough while underestimating Prescott.
Khan hired Rubio just before the fight with Prescott after he fired another trainer, Oliver Harrison, earlier this year. |
