Worapoj Petchkoom has become the third member of the national amateur boxing squad, following Manus Boonjumnong and Pichai Sayotha, to drop out of the upcoming King’s Cup tournament.

Athens Games silver medalist bantamweight boxer Worapoj has requested to withdraw himself from the upcoming 31st King’s Cup tournament, scheduled on April 4-9 in Bangkok, due to poor physical conditions, said General Taweep Jantararoj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (ABAT).

The upset ABAT chief said if no proper medical report was provided, the association would demand for a punishment on Worapoj, as his sudden withdrawal from the tournament has affected the team that now has to look for his replacement.

Worapoj, however, insisted that his physical conditions are not ready for the fights due to his injury at the shoulder, while adding that he has not prepared himself as he was busy studying his master’s degree program. He said if he fought and performed poorly, it would damage the reputation of ABAT as well as the national squad.

Two-time Olympic medalist Manus earlier withdrew the games after a car accident, while Pichai, another Olympic athlete, also dropped out for an injury from training.

ความ เคลื่อนไหวศึกมวยสากลสมัครเล่นชิงถ้วยพระราชทานคิงสคัพ ครั้งที่ 31 ระหว่างวันที่ 4-9 เม.ย. นี้ ที่เวทีมวยชั่วคราว ห้างสรรพสินค้าเดอะมอลล์ งามวงศ์วาน ซึ่งสมาคมมวยสากลสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทยฯ ส่งนักชก 2 ทีมเข้าร่วมการแข่งขัน เป็นนักชกชุด A และชุด B ปักหลักฟิตซ้อมอยู่ที่แคมป์โบนันซ่า จ.นครราชสีมา ล่าสุด “เสธ.ทวีป” พลเอกทวีป จันทรโรจน์ นายกสมาคมมวยสากลสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย เปิดเผยว่า ต้องปรับทัพนักชกทั้ง 2 ทีมกันใหม่ เนื่องจาก วรพจน์    เพชรขุ้ม นักชกเหรียญเงินโอลิมปิก 2004 “เอเธนส์เกมส์” ที่ประเทศกรีซ ซึ่งเป็นตัวหลักในชุด A รุ่นแบนตั้มเวต (54 กก.) ได้แจ้งขอถอนตัวจากทีมชาติชุดคิงสคัพหนนี้ โดยอ้างว่า สภาพร่างกายไม่สมบูรณ์ ไม่พร้อมที่จะลงชก ซึ่งนับเป็นนักชกทีมชาติไทยชุด A รายที่ 3 ที่ถอนตัวหลังจากก่อนหน้านี้ มนัส บุญจำนงค์ ถอนตัวเพราะบาดเจ็บจากอุบัติเหตุขับรถชนเสา และ พิชัย สาโยธา บาดเจ็บมีแผลแตกจากการลงนวม
 
เกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้ “เสธ.ทวีป” กล่าวว่า จะต้องมีการตรวจสอบจากฝ่ายแพทย์ หากไม่มีเหตุผลจริง จะต้องมีการลงโทษจากสมาคมมวยสากลสมัครเล่นฯ เพราะการถอนตัวกะทันหันทำให้กระทบมากต่อการจัดทีม และหานักชกมาแทนในรุ่นนี้ ขณะเดียวกันผู้สื่อข่าวได้สอบถามไปยัง วรพจน์ เพชรขุ้ม ได้เปิดเผยว่า ตนเองมีสภาพร่างกายไม่พร้อม ร่างกายไม่สมบูรณ์จริง ๆ  เพราะมีอาการบาดเจ็บที่หัวไหล่ ประกอบกับฟิตซ้อมไม่เต็มที่เพราะติดเรียนหนังสือ ซึ่งกำลังเรียนต่อปริญญาโทอยู่ เกรงว่าถ้าลงชกแล้วจะโชว์ฟอร์มไม่ดีทำให้เสียชื่อสมาคมฯ และทีมชาติไทยด้วย.
