Amateur boxers from 20 countries will compete in the King’s Cup tournament next week, while the Thai boxing chief is confident his squad is able to defend the cup.

According to the press conference on March 27 in Bangkok by General Taweep Jantararoj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (ABAT), the King’s Cup tournament on April 4-9 in Nonthaburi will host events of nine weight classes from the flyweight up to the light heavyweight, while athletes from 20 countries are expected to participate.

Apart from the host Thailand that sends two national squads, the other 19 countries are Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, South Korea, Australia, Syria, Pakistan, Japan, the Philippines, India, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.

General Taweep is concerned of the Thai performance in the tournament due to the withdrawal of the two top boxers, two-time Olympic medalist Manus Boonjumnong and Athens Games silver medalist bantamweight boxer Worapoj Petchkoom, but said he is “80% confident” that the Thai team would be able to defend the cup. He said Thailand will at least get two gold medals from Amnat Ruenroeng and Manus’ younger brother Non Boonjumnong.

The Thai boxer who wins a gold medal in the tournament will be rewarded with 100,000 Baht, but those fighting in less than four bouts will instead get 50,000 Baht, said the chief.

เสธ.วีปเชื่อไทยป้องกันแชมป์คิงส์คัพได้

เมื่อ 27 มี.ค.ที่ผ่านมา ที่โรงแรมเฟิร์สต์ โฮเต็ล กรุงเทพฯ "เสธ.ทวีป"พล.อ.ทวีป จันทรโรจน์ นายกสมาคมมวยสากลสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย และพล.อ.นรินทร์ แทบประสิทธิ์ ในฐานะประธานจัดการแข่งขัน ร่วมแถลงข่าวการจัดการแข่งขันมวยสากลสมัครเล่นชิงถ้วยพระราชทานคิงส์คัพ ครั้งที่ 31 ประจำปี 2552 ที่จะเปิดฉากดวลกำปั้นระหว่าง 4-9 เม.ย.นี้ ตั้งแต่เวลา 13.00 น.เป็นต้นไป ที่ห้างสรรพสินค้าเดอะมอลล์ งามวงศ์วาน จ.นนทบุรี มีชิงชัย 9 รุ่น ตั้งแต่รุ่นไลต์ฟลายเวต (48 ก.ก.) ถึงรุ่นไลต์เฮฟวี่เวต (81 ก.ก.)

ครั้งนี้จะมีคู่แข่งรวม 19 ชาติชิงชัย ได้แก่ รัสเซีย, คาซัคสถาน, อุซเบกิสถาน, จีน, เกาหลีใต้, ออสเตรเลีย, ซีเรีย, ปากีสถาน, ญี่ปุ่น, ฟิลิปปินส์, อินเดีย, ฮอลแลนด์, กัมพูชา, ลาว, เวียดนาม, มาเลเซีย,สิงคโปร์, อินโดนีเซีย และปาปัวนิวกินี ส่วนไทยส่งนักชกเข้าร่วมแข่งขัน 2 ทีม ช่อง 7 สีถ่ายทอดสดตั้งแต่เวลา 15.00-17.00 น.

ด้านความหวังนั้น "เสธ.ทวีป" กล่าวว่า รู้สึกหนักใจเช่นกัน เพราะครั้งนี้นักชกความหวังถอนตัวไป 2 รายได้แก่ มนัส บุญจำนงค์ กับ วรพจน์ เพชรขุ้ม แต่ยังมั่นใจ 80% ว่าจะรักษาถ้วยพระราชทานไว้ในเมืองไทยอีกครั้ง ขณะนี้ตั้งรางวัลพิเศษไว้เป็นกำลังใจให้นักชกไทย กำหนดว่ารุ่นไหนที่ชก 4 ครั้งขึ้นไปแล้วได้เหรียญทอง ได้อัดฉีด 1 แสนบาท แต่รุ่นที่ได้เหรียญทองแต่ชกไม่ถึง 4 ครั้ง ได้ 50,000 บาท เพราะบางรุ่นจะมีนักชกลงแข่งน้อย ขณะนี้มั่นใจแล้ว 2 ทองจาก นน บุญจำนงค์ และอำนาจ รื่นเริง
